Liard Easter

Liard Hotsprings, often merely a stopover travelers on the Alaska Highway, is a destination of its own that beckons many into its soothing, and allegedly healing, waters.  Year round accessible and thoughtfully distanced from the highway, its natural-scaped pools with lightly graveled riverbed and exotic hardwood benches are a rustic and raw companion to their southern Radium and Banff commercial cousins.

A wooden boardwalk, linking the hotsprings and parking lot, meandering through a warm water swamp and boreal forest does more than protect the sensitive habitat from wandering footprints. It provides an uncluttered journey to disconnect from the drive you're enduring, refocus on nature's wealth while contemplating the special environment you're in.

A repeat visitor - overnight and passing through - this Easter was my first visit during winter.  Dan and I were joined by his aunt and uncle from Whitehorse for a weekend of relaxing, looking out at stunning northern Rockies scenery and even outdoor! barbecuing.

A handful of the sites in the campground near the hotsprings were occupied by hardy campers both in trailers and tenting!  Usually a keen camper, I firmly draw the line at winter camping.  Mercifully there was a simple lodge (and lodge is a generous term) across the highway to bunk down for the night.  Heading south to Muncho Lake the next night, we checked into the homey Northern Rockies Lodge.  An Easter brekkie the next morning and we bid 'til soon' to Bob and Dawna as another northern roadtrip came to its close.

Westward ho(e)!

Have a listen to Sarah Hepola's interview with CBC on traveling alone.

With too many waxing on about how travel has reordered lives and given them new found direction, travel has, in too many ways, unshaped me.

I was willingly and quickly pulled out of the "go to university, spend money you don't have studying something vague very few give a rat's arse about, meet a partner, get married, spend way too much money again, buy a house, make lots of body wrecking babies that will drain your time, income and energy for the next 18 years while eking out a career from an expensive liberal arts university that no one's heard of and you're still paying for."

Blah.  Twenty-seven, debt free and recently re-unemployed, I couldn't be more pleased.  A mild uncertainty accompanies me like a case of lice as I pour over provincial and world maps while anxiously glancing at my bank account.

While I don't have sponsors like similarly named Sherri I take great pleasure that we're doing it simply because we can.

Where ever we can.  Tonight I'm leaving for a 10-ish day tour with the fella westward along Highway 16.  Fishing, hiking, hanging out, grizz bear spotting and cheap American beer await!

Island saunter

Barely in Chetwynd for more than 24 hours, I reorganized summer gear into Road Trip acceptable kit.  Destination: Spring!

Still shaking off its winter coat, Chetwynd was cold and blowy and I was keen to escape.  Sleeping bags, dodgy stove, tent, portable music devices, ample space for tetris-ing Big City purchases into a wee Civic and we were off!

Highlights included: Vancouver eats from sushi to dim sum with legit Chinese speakers; Salt Spring Island with its farm stands on the side of the road offering garlic, dried tomatoes, ginger cookies and daffodils, oh the daffodils! to local beers and oysters to sea walks looking for seals, otters, whales; Campbell River's exceptional museum and night in with the ever lovable, passionate and hospitable Prestons; cycling around Victoria in between visiting Dan's family and catching The Skatalies lackluster show; looking out the window on the way from Kamloops to Chetwynd.

Whoa birds! On the boat from Vancouver to Victoria

Alaska in the fall

Ten days in confined spaces is the ultimate test of a friendship. Between contracts, and waiting for the school year to begin, I jumped in a friend's car with Cheryl and beelined it up to Alaska. Stealing a tarp on the way from a friend's relatives (mostly accidental) we made it as far as the Kenai Peninsula and while raining its guts out, we were able to appreciate our three non-rain days.

I even slept on a picnic table in the Yukon on a rare clear night and let the stars be my blankie. Other highlights include being RIGHTTHERE when a humpback popped up beside the boat, and seeing a glacier calve. Whoa. Throw in some g-bears snacking on various stages of dying salmon, hilarious locals that ensured our pints weren't empty for long and stunning, dramatic scenery and we were two happy, if occasionally/consistently soggy, Canadians.
